I. Lorenz: Bssss ... dedeledelem

Have you ever exactly listened, how something sounds? Would you like to write down such a sound?

Many special sounds and things which either make sonds or widely are associated to some sounds had come across me. I collected a few of them and gave some explanation.

Let us immediately dive into this and start with the title of this title.

Bssss ... dedeledelem

Please let the first word melt on your tounge in a long way - and then say the second word a bit quicker and after a short break. Recognised it?

When I was a child I asked myself, why a bus is called a bus. Well - it makes such a sound, e.g. when the doors open or close.

Today we can say that the mechanism for operating the doors not alway is air pressure operated - but the expression kept staying in my mind.

Yet another sound simply is "bsss" - related to the air pressure brakes of a bus.

Holdidoldi

What the hack is a "holdidoldi"? Difficult to guess - and again this well known gadget takes us back into childhood: A simple chain which makes such a similar noise when moved around, especially on a floor.

And still until to day I love to use this term.

Gile, gile, gile -- Geil, geil, geil

I never could understand my mother forbid me this sound. Later the explanation came at hand: The German word "geil" means something like "horny".

But Mama, this is harmless at all, this is how the church bells sound.

Even more funny is that there is a place in the Rhine Land whose name sounds similar and ends with 'kirchen' (church). Dear citizens of this place, please do not take this the wrong way or offence of this association.

Himele, himele, himele, chrrrllll -- Heimele, heimele, heimele, chrrrllll

Easy to guess? Yes, again out of childhood. We need to become a child in order to understand such sounds. But what could it be?

Think of a water basin sink and the sound the water makes when going down the pipe. May the first sound be difficult to imagine, but the last one is the final good-bye of the water.

Pfrrrt-dedede, pfrrrt-dedede, pfrrrt-dedede

Please think for a moment. As funny it may sound, it is to a certain end and depending on your own perception.

Animal farmers need to feed their animals - and one usual plant in Rheinhessen was the fodder beet. Whether this English term meets the right German one - difficult to find a bitter one.

A bit large and hard such a beet would be to chew down - unless an elephant. So the farmers used to have a mill: One guy cranks the mill, while another one throws one beet after the other onto the funnel, while the pieces kept falling into a bucket. And the mill goes ...

Douuure, douure, doure di ryyyy -- Dauuure, dauure, daure di reiiiiii

Let's get automotivated with this next sequence of sound. Again, let it melt on your tounge and close your eyes.

This about starting the engine of your car - and you will hear such a sound or similar.

Call the automobilist club, if you should here something like "clk lk" in stead of the above one.

Zy zy zy zy zy -- Zei zei zei zei zei

Please pronounce this sequence in a fast way again.

Have yourself be set back into the sixties, into a time where every second vehicle was a beetle. And this was the sound in idle cycle.

shrhh shrhh shrhh wrrrmmm

Now what is this? Please pronounce this sequence in a fast way again.

You hear a train which passes you by with three coaches and a diesel locomotive at the end.

bwww www ww ww ww wwwwww

A bit difficult to pronounce it is: let the w sound with the feeling of a vowel like a fine e and put a stress on the first syllable - and you may hear the sound of an opening or closing zip.

A bit similar is the sound of a pair pants made of fine fabric and getting split.

Boommboo Boommboo -- Bumbu Bumbu

At a first glance this sequence sounds quite African - but in fact more Asian it is. Not at all an onomatopoetic sequence, just the Indonesian term for spice.

I already had to laugh when I heard the word in singular (boommboo). But in the next sentence I heard it was in plural (boommboo boomboo) - and that was the moment I kept rolling on the floor.

Njt njt njt ... njt njt njt ... njt njt njt njt njt njt njt

Again a hello out of childhood? Exactly. With this little sequence we are about to enter the realm of musical instruments.

Please listen to the first few bars of the motif of "Bitter Sweet Symphony" by The Verve. As this sequence is taken from a more classical on, it is given to the violin.

Wieder ein Gruß aus der Kindheit? Genau.

Woot woot woot woo-woo-woo woot woot woot -- Wutt wutt wutt wu-wu-wu wutt wutt wuut

Still we are with musical instruments - and this seems to sound like a real fat bass.

Exactly - what about Bavarian brass music without a tuba?

Genau - was wäre die Bayrische Blasmusik ohne Tuba?

njö njöö njö njö njö njönjönjöööööööö ... njö njöö njö njö njö njöööööööö

Yet another musical instrument we may know from jazz and swing, but we find it in pieces of pop music as well. Here are the first few bars of "Baker Street" by Gerry Rafferty: the known saxophone solo.

Howm -- Haum

This is yet another expression out of my youngest days. It is taking something into the mouth in one go with the upmost enjoyment: to take it and to very slowly eat it. In the farest sense it is the virtual sound of the mouth embraching such a great bit of food.

bfrrrfffff f f  f

This sound may remind to the most funny thing in the world - and in fact, it is a quite similar mechanism. Please pronounce the "r"s with the tip of your tounge.

It is the sound of a blown-up air balloon which we simply let go.

Shshlllshfshll boofffshsh -- Schschlllschfschll bufffschsch

You need to pronounce this sound quite quickly, without any break, especially the last word and this really loud.

Funny it is, if you do the original from the balcony in a high-rise building, in front of which there is a huge open space and some other such buildings around. It is the blowing up and burst of a paper bag.

Krrchchchssssrsrsrsrsssssss

Also quite funny does this sound impress. The final "s" need to be pronounced very fine.

It is grinding powder sugar from cristaline sugar on an electric coffee mill.

Miowwmm -- Miauumm

No, it is not a cat crying here.

Let us think of a cicular saw and cut a cabbage turnip with quite a ligneous reticulum inside.

Waddch

One could think of a tomate which is overridden by a car. Far away.

It is the sound of a melon being cut using a well-cutting melon slicer.

Fffllpp

As if something makes a slip.

There is a special cake which is more known in the Asian area: the Chiffon Cake. It is, when out of the oven, suspended. It has got a consistency similar to sponge cake and does not fall together into itself.

But - it can fall out of the form so often ...

Shwwatchi

The sound of a fine sneeze is not too far away.

It is an automated air freshener which releases a squirt of fragrance.

This is not a real sound; it rather is the feeling with a matter, which I certainly must have felt when still a child.

One presses a door handle when opening the door and releases the handle again.

Zech, zech, Zech

One has to make a little pause after every word and imagine the sound reminding to a jet engine in the background.

It is the sound of a vacuum cleaner nozzle, when moving back and forth on a carpet floor while cleaning.

Yammede dedede dedede dedede ...

The sound repeats, until the procedure is at end.

You can hear it, when somebody cranks the machine for cutting Spanish ham.

Alb alb alb alb alb alb alb alb ...

The sound repeats with some 3 to 4 cycles.

It is the sound of an historic one-cylinder tractor in idle state.

It is the sound of wobbled waveform generator producing rectangular signals from a very low to a very high audible frequency.

Woom-match -- Wum-matsch

The two parts need to be pronounced nearly together and quickly.

A jacket potato shot with a potato gun.
